Socialist, Thy Name is America
Last night, when Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi said, "We will be joining those who established Social Security, Medicare and now, tonight, health care for all Americans,” she revealed the truth. It’s an ugly fact that, hopefully, Americans are realizing today; America is and has been socialist for quite some time.
In the late 1800s and early 1900s the Progressives—who favored more government involvement in the social, economic, and political life of Americans—started advocating and implementing socialist ideas at various levels of government in America. For the most part, the Progressives’ efforts were held at bay by those with a classical view of the Constitution. Where Progressives succeeded though, they did the most damage: education. By successfully implementing a new education system, Progressives socialized many young, American minds to view the world through a paradigm that embraces an active and large government, while simultaneously debasing free enterprise and personal responsibility.
Many of those young minds later became teachers, professors, lawyers, politicians, bureaucrats, and judges. By 1929 and the Great Crash, the Progressives had made significant inroads into positions of influence. Presidents Hoover and Roosevelt implemented many of their ideas, and, in so doing, prolonged the economic downturn of the Great Depression.
It was then, during the Great Depression, when President Roosevelt built his new temple of government that socialism metastasized. Social Security, farm subsidies, labor laws, Medicare, Medicare Part D, wage and price controls, the demise of hard currency, public utilities, housing subsidies, food stamps, and plenty more were either created during the New Deal or built upon its foundation.
At Intellectual Takeout, we are relieved that many Americans are beginning to realize what we have believed for some time: The United States is already consumed by socialism. When it comes to preventing or repealing bad legislation like the health care bill, what we do now is a rear-guard action. You’re simply trying to hold off the inevitable because the education establishment has been and is actively influencing most young minds to embrace the ideas of the Left. Until that situation changes, the likelihood of restoring liberty in America is slim. It pains us terribly to say such things, but, by recognizing the truth, we can establish a starting point for the restoration of liberty.
Despite that dreary perspective, we urge you to take heart: All is not lost!
Yes, socialism will continue to eat away at the country. But it is an unsustainable system that is already crumbling. The country is buried in debt—over $12 trillion of it in a $14 trillion economy. Social Security and Medicare are bankrupt to the point that we have over $50 trillion in future debt-obligations. Numerous states are facing massive deficits—Illinois alone has liabilities and unfunded commitments over $100 billion, which is nearly $10,000 per resident. The education system is failing to graduate literate, critically thinking men and women—almost a third of the country can’t read above a fifth grade level. Socialism’s end approaches.
Our primary focus should be on advancing freedom by retaking education and media. Yes, we should continue the efforts to get like-minded individuals elected and to repeal or halt bad laws. But more importantly, we must not allow our children to be fashioned at the establishment’s will any longer. Additionally, we must be willing to boldly pursue the truth, no matter which interest or political groups take offense. When the current system of socialism collapses, as it will, there are two directions the country can go: despotism or freedom.
The truth is out about socialism and America. And it will become more and more apparent in the coming months and years that the socialist system now in place is failing. Many Americans will want alternatives. It is our job to steer our country toward freedom through education. With hard work, prudence, and patience, we can and will regain the liberty that made this country thrive in the first place.
