New Library Topic: Teachers Unions 101

The dismal state of public K-12 and higher education is a matter of constant and vigorous debate. At IT, we certainly seek to contribute to that debate and effect positive change--toward greater freedom and personal responsiblity. In that regard, we have made some recent additions to our library, which will be announced over the coming days on the blog. So stay tuned.

Teachers Unions 101
provides an overview of how teachers unions violate teachers' individual rights by forcing them to support political causes via coerced payment of union dues, and how they continually stifle progress in education reform. In their defense, teachers unions claim that they regard teaching as a noble and vital profession, and that they place the interests of our children above all. Yeah, right! Frederick Hess (American Enterprise Institute) and Martin West (Brookings Institution) rightly expose the unions' hypocrisy: “The NEA and AFT have long argued that what is good for America’s teachers is good for America’s children—and by implication, for America itself. As a general statement this is demonstrably false, and the willingness of too many superintendents, school boards, legislators, and governors to act as if it were true has had a pernicious effect on the quality of American schooling.”
