Rome, a republic and then an empire, stands as one of the greatest civilizations in world history. From 509 BC to 31 BC the Roman Republic grew and expanded outward from what is now the Italian peninsula into Iberia, Greece, western Europe, and North Africa. In 31 BC the Roman Republic officially collapsed into the Roman Empire. The empire arguably lasted until 410 AD when the barbarian Goths sacked the city.
