Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) Attack: A Preventable Homeland Security Catasrophe
Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) Attack: A Preventable Homeland Security Catasrophe
Jenna Baker McNeill and Richard Weitz
Heritage Foundation
October 20, 2008
This article describes the potential disaster that could take place if an EMP were to hit the United States. The authors describe how it would not be that difficult for rogue terrorist states to acquire the technology, as it is not that expensive or complex. They caution that an EMP attack is entirely preventable, and go into detail about how the United States might go about protecting itself from this type of attack. They advise four actions the US must take in order to remain safe: perform more research on the threat, build a comprehensive missile defense system, incorporate EMP attacks into National Planning scenarios, and develop a national recovery plan.
