First the Barbie makeover, now this.
The Miss America Pageant announced last week that it will no longer be a pageant, a word which the Macmillan Dictionary defines as "a competition between young women in which judges decide who is the most beautiful."
“We are no longer a pageant; we are a competition. We will no longer judge our candidates on their outward physical appearance,” said the fully-clad Gretchen Carlson, a former pageant winner and head of the group. “Miss America will represent a new generation of female leaders focused on scholarship, social impact, talent and empowerment."
Oh, boy. That will improve the ratings.
I've got an idea: Have the contestants read their resumes onstage. The crowd will go wild.
The show, of course, was a relic of a Hollywood that has spent most of its existence promoting all the things it now condemns, including objectifying women. In fact, the last several years have been a painful striptease in which an entire industry progressively reveals just how much hypocrisy it has engaged in over its history.
All those pompous warnings about the dangers of Donald Trump, Steve Bannon, and Jerry Falwell, Jr., and all along the most dangerous place in the country was the Hollywood casting couch.
The announcement is really just one more example of how the sexual revolution is eating its young. The sexual revolution was all about having as much sex as you wanted, anywhere you wanted, any time you wanted it, and Hollywood was at the vanguard of promoting it.
Of course, you couldn't engage in all of this free sex without taking precautions. So instead of sharing white wine over soft candlelight, you ingested carcinogenic contraceptive chemicals and donned condoms.
No wonder so many men have ED now. What's the point?
But none of this matters now because the crusaders for more sex have been replaced by the Politically Correct schoolmarms who wag their fingers at you for even thinking about it, and who can't tell the difference between a male and a female anyway.
The question is, of course, what does a pageant do when it has decided not to be a pageant anymore? Can Miss America exist without the swimsuit competition? What does it replace it with? The pants suit competition?
It's got to be tough being a pageant that doesn't want to be a pageant anymore. But there you have it.
